7th Grade Art Class Visits Intrepid
The seventh grade art class had a spectacular visit to the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space museum on Friday, April 29. Having spent the last five weeks drawing from blueprints and creating scale models of the aircraft carrier and accompanying aircraft, it was like walking into the manifestation of their imagination to be on the deck of the REAL carrier.
"I kept hearing things like, 'No Way!', or, 'There it IS!', as though around each corner we had another magic encounter," said art teacher Bryn Gillette. "We spent a good portion of time sitting and drawing 'our' planes up close and personal on the deck. History came alive as we stood where a Kamikaze plane had crashed into the Intrepid during WWII, and as we crawled through the narrow hallways, scaled steep stairs, and peered into the real living quarters and combat stations of generations past. We had begun our 3D study of the ship in class by building small Lego replicas, and all of us were dumbfounded to find a full scale (to the height of a Lego man) Lego recreation of the carrier upon entering the ship. None of us, however, were prepared for the shear size and wonder of the Enterprise Space Shuttle. It was easily 5 or 6 times bigger than we had imagined, and dwarfed all the other aircraft we had come to study. Gillette concluded, "It was a day we won't forget, and we will be spending the remaining weeks of our term digesting the inspiration as we create large scale replicas of 'our' planes and an eight foot model of the Intrepid."
Governor Weicker (GP '17) Speaks with Government Class
Students in Slade Mead’s U.S. Government class had the opportunity to speak with former U.S. Senator and Connecticut Governor Lowell Weicker as he called into class on Thursday, May 5th. Weicker, who gained national attention for his service on the Senate Watergate Committee, had a long career in Government and was also known for being a strong advocate for the rights of the disabled during his time in Congress.
Weicker shared his experiences with the students, answering their questions and giving his perspective on the current election, while imploring them with a powerful message. “I emphasize to you that probably in no endeavor can you impact on more people than you can in the field of government,” Weicker stressed. “The reason I mention my experience, is because all of you are being discouraged from going into politics. That’s the reason why we are left with a small pool of candidates. I would urge every one of you to seriously consider going into government. It doesn’t have to be elected, it can be appointed. Government is a wonderful thing that can help people beyond belief.” Weicker then shared his role in passing the Americans with Disabilities Act, fighting the AIDS epidemic and sanctioning South Africa helping bring an end to apartheid. In his 24 years in the United States Senate, Lowell Weicker did a great deal of good both to the United States and the world.
Slade concluded the class by reiterating Weicker’s message. “You don’t have to be elected; you can serve in your town on a board, or you can be elected to a little office and do things like zoning or wetlands. One of the things I really hope you all take away is that politics doesn’t have to be a negative. Some really good things can come out of it.”
Trinity-Pawling Thanks BOCES for Their 5 Years of Service
For the past five years each Wednesday many of our sit down lunch tables have been set by students in the Dutchess County BOCES district program. BOCES works with developmentally disadvantaged students exposing them to job skills. Pawling High School has been their host site. These special students along with their job coaches descend weekly upon Scully Hall to set our tables.
"Saadiq Paulin has been setting tables at Trinity-Pawling for four years. He usually does ten tables each Wednesday," his teacher Martha Schultz explained. "When he started he would do a couple tables and he now can set ten! We love coming to your beautiful dining hall and giving our students a place to learn a skill." On May 11th the Trinity-Pawling School community held a celebration lunch for Saadiq and a second student Alexia Gomez who is in her third year of the BOCES program; collectively they have set over 800 Trinity-Pawling tables!
BOCES is, unfortunately, relocating their classroom site at the end of this school year. As a result, these Wednesday helpers will stop coming to Trinity-Pawling. In the past five years they have set over 1500 tables - thank you BOCES!
Saadiq & Alexia with their BOCES teachers and coaches are pictured here with Slade Mead.

Spring One-Acts Review
Pictured above: Mr. Chris Gillman, Ryan Winn '17, & Justin So '16
After two successful shows this year, the theater students finished off the year with a collection of short performances last Thursday. The night of variety performances included multiple short skits directed by students, and a few musical performances from Justin So '16 and Ryan Winn '17. In finale, there was a one act play called "The Ghost of Gamage" written by Miles Martin '16 and Hunter Olstein '17 depicting what would happen if the founder of Trinity Pawling magically reemerged on campus. Miles Martin '16 to Play Soccer at Sewanee
Miles Martin '16 joined the Trinity-Pawling soccer program his freshman year. At the time Miles had been a goal keeper and the varsity team had several goal keepers on the team already. Hoping to make the varsity squad, Miles inquired about how he could improve upon his skills in order to make the team. His athleticism proved strong, and it was decided that he should come out of goal and try his skills at being a field player. As a sophomore, he showed up prepared and ready to play on the field. That year, Miles earned a spot as a defensive back and would hold down the center back position for the next three years. He went on to earn honorable mention "All New England" his junior year, and "All New England" and WNEPSSA "All Star" awards his senior year. Miles was team Captain his senior year, and will go on to play at the college level at Sewanee, where he joins the team next season. "We are sure he will shine as a defensive midfielder. We wish him the best of luck and look forward to watching his success from afar," says Trinity-Pawling soccer coach Tucker Barnaby. Congratulations, Miles! #RollPride
Art Teacher Bryn Gillette Presents to T-P Community
Tuesday morning students and faculty gathered in Gardiner Theater for a wonderful presentation by art teacher Bryn Gillette. Bryn has been inspiring art and media students at Trinity-Pawling since 2010, but his profound work goes far beyond the classroom. In his presentation, Bryn shared his story of becoming an artist, a husband, a father, and a man of faith. His journey of self-discovery over the past 10 years has taken him around the world, and has enabled him to seamlessly fuse his church mission work with his art.
Most recently, Bryn’s work has been dedicated to serving the needs of Haitian orphans. Following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Bryn has spent much time there creating ways to support the children. The non-profit organization he founded – TeamOne:27 has raised funds and sent 15 Haiti Relief shipping container “buses” full of food and supplies.
With restoring Haiti as a driving force, Bryn spent 4 years creating a series of 12 door-size panel “painted prayers” that both celebrates the beauty and grieves the destruction of Haiti. The 12 paintings now tour the country in an effort to encourage a perpetual conversation geared to the restoration of Haiti. Just last month, Bryn had the opportunity to present his work in Haiti to over 200 world leaders. To learn more about Bryn’s work, visit his website www.beyondtheruins.com

There was a lot of gratitude and appreciation felt by everyone. What we do in the Middle School is a team effort between the faculty, parents, and the students. This is why what we do at Trinity-Pawling works!"
